005 Eric Coryell…. The REAL issues are talked about in the hall, in the parking lot, or in a bar… Let’s Change That!

In podcast #5, we welcome Eric Coryell author of ‘Revolutionize Team Work‘ and highly sought after leadership consultant.  Eric takes us through some of the myths about accountability where in most organizations true accountability falls onto the leader and in the end there is no true team accountability!  Think about it….this is so true.

The #1 human need is to be connected.  Without it we will die as human beings.  We go to incredible lengths to be connected and we all unknowingly operate out of fear of separation and this leads us down a path to dysfunction!

Eric takes us through the steps of how most company’s REAL issues are solved.  He goes into great length on how we avoid anxiety by ‘pairing’ where we talk negatively about others.  The thing we don’t realize is that it increases our FEAR OF SEPARATION.  This paradoxical relationship between anxiety and fear of separation is the key to Eric’s approach.

Here is the inverse relationship between Anxiety & Fear Of Separation

  1. ‘Do nothing’                             Anxiety goes down – FOS goes up!
  2. ‘Pairing’                                    Anxiety goes down – FOS goes up!
  3. ‘Look to Leader’                      Anxiety goes down – FOS goes up!
  4. Talk directly person               Anxiety goes UP     – FOS could go up or down (Depends!)
  5. Group  Setting                         Anxiety goes UP     – FOS goes down

Eric talks at length about the “Psychological Contract” that we all have that we won’t talk about each other’s performance.  He goes through several very simple steps on how to break this contract!

He also goes into several meeting rules about group communication.  Here are two

– Eliminate the use of  plural pronouns like ‘we, everybody, them and our’.  These pronouns can                  create a strong Fear of Separation!  We statements creates judgement. SPEAK FOR YOURSELF

– Eliminate the use of ‘Questions’ in meetings.  Have people make statements instead.  We don’t                  think in questions!
